The notified Ministerial Decision concerning agriculture and livestock issues an animal health alert in view of the occurrence of reinfestation by Cochliomyia hominivorax, also known as New World screwworm (NWS), in Panama, Costa Rica and, more recently, Nicaragua. El Salvador has been free of this disease since 1995, when it was eradicated from national territory. The entry into the country of live animals of susceptible species from countries infested with NWS poses a high risk of the spread and establishment of the disease in our country, which could affect domestic production through losses caused by a deterioration in the health status of affected animals. Animals could even die in the event of severe infestations. The disease can also affect human beings and therefore poses a risk to public health as well.
